Haha, I was planning on posting some REO Speedwagon later today.
Another fun fact: REO stands for Ransom E. Olds. The founder of Oldsmobile

Heard that a long while back. As a big Oldsmobile fan, I was excited to learn that bit of trivia. Though I still don't like the band.

REO would have had no translation problems at all in Germany, as a goods truck is an LKW or Lastkraftwagen. The Speedwagon could have been a Schnellwagen. Maybe.
brb borrowing time machine to fuck with heavy truck history

Heh. REO Speedwagon. One of two concerts I saw because of a girl when I was young and stupid. The other one was Journey ... and Loverboy opened for them.
I've never admitted this on the Internet before.

Really? You did not know of REO?

And Steely Dan was named after a steam-powered dildo from Naked Lunch .

I would argue the shame of having seen Loverboy in concert is outweighed by Journey significantly, but then, I'm a hater.

I'm just waiting for somebody to admit to going to Honeymoon Suite or Autograph. I don't think we've really plumbed the Silliness Depths until someone does that.

No. I have no familiarity at all with any of the smaller U.S. automakers prior to the 50's. The only ones I can name off the top of my head are Auburn and Cord.

Who heard it from where, exactly?

A friend, who heard it from another.

Just giving you a hard time. :) Most have not heard of them. I grew up in Michigan and to this day the descendants of REO, known as Autocar Truck Company is still in business They produce work trucks. These are beasts that haul 16 axle, 160,000 lb GVW loads.
